Mr Velayati who was in the meeting claimed Mr Ban called
Ayatollah Khamenei as the ‘Leader of Islamic World’ but Martin Nesirky,
spokesperson of Ban Ki-Moon, told BBC Persian that this is manifestly not true and he
"categorically denies that Sec. General called Ayatollah Khamenei "the leader of the Islamic world.’
Such claims and denial are not new in Iran politics. In February of this year Mohammad Mohammadi Golpayegani, the head of Supreme Leader's Office, said the day Nelson Mandela, the South African leader came to visit Ali Khamenei, he sat on the floor and called him 'my leader.’ This claim was denied by Mandela’s office the following day. They even said Mandela sat on the floor as there was only one chair in the room which was taken by Ayatollah Khamenei.
Iranian have this proverb that in time of hardship, you should keep your cheeks red by slapping yoursefl. It seems that an isolated Iran has accepted the pain of slaps in order to save face.

The daily Kayhan, published by Khamenei’s office, was more enthusiastic. “A New World Order is taking shape,” it claimed. “It will be guided by Our Leader.”
Needless to say, the claim was instantly denied by Ban’s spokesman Martin Nesirky.
“It is impossible that the Secretary-General would have said that,” he told reporters. “Mr. Ban could not have given such a title to the leader of Iran.”
